My next tattoo: The Vienna Tree

vienna tree blog
This Tshirt is no longer available. Ciara ran her clothing company brands Ciara Couture and Queensbound from January 2007 to December 2010. She has ceased all clothing brand operations as of January 1, 2011.

So, I had been looking for a chinese phoenix design for my next tattoo but I wasn’t loving what I was finding so I decided to go in another direction. I have quite a few art books and in my Vienna 1900 book about the Viener Werkstatte. I came across this bad-ass postcard. I love the tree so I’m going to have that tattooed across my back. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the right design for my next tattoo. But I won’t be getting it until I make one million in sales. This tattoo will be the gift I give myself when we reach that goal.

The knot of eternity

Sigh. I’ve come to terms. My rings are gone forever. I just can’t find them. I have no clue what happened to them.

Of course, I’m a bit depressed about it, but I must accept it. I am a big believer that things happen for a reason. Adam, who feels so bad for me, said that the rings served their purpose and that we are ready for our new phase in life. I just love that.

For the new phase in life, we are celebrating with getting the Buddhist Knot of Eternity tattooed on our ring fingers. The picture here is an elaborate version. We’ll be getting simplified versions. The knot represents interconnectedness of all things, the inter-twining of wisdom and compassion, and of time and change. I have been a Buddhist for 8 years now and it has helped me to better accept the inevitable changes in life.

I have been wanting another tattoo for awhile now, but wasn’t sure of what I wanted until now. I’m ready.

Tattoos and Tees

phoenix.jpgback.jpg

Can you picture this on my back? Well, I have been for the last couple of weeks. This is the tattoo I plan on getting across my back.  The picture above is a photoshop file that allowed me to figure out placement. I’ve been wanting to get another tattoo for awhile and finally I’m ready. This will be my third tattoo. I think Adam was a bit shocked about the location and size but of course, he would never say anything, but I saw it when his eyes popped out of his head. My younger brother Cal is going with me and he will be getting his very first tatto.

I have a book of hua yang Chinese Folk Designs where I found this design of a Phoenix. The beauty of the phoenix comes from its simplicity and striking complexity. It’s basically an one-line, one-color design. We don’t find this kind of simplicity in our chaotic visual world. I would never come up with this design solution because of my visual vocabulary. We create from what we know and what we grew up in. These folk designs were created in a much simpler time, and the artist used the most basic tools and design fundamentals.

The Phoenix symbolizes the Empress, beauty, peace, prosperity, and sun. My grandmother is part Chinese so I grew up around all types of Chinese designs, patterns, and symbols. I never paid much mind to them growing up, but now I can see the influence in my life. I have two other Chinese folk designs that I am working on, butterfly and dragon. And I think all three will be absolutely fantabulous as tee designs. I promise. To be continued…
