I have been asked to participate in a 2009 Long Island City artist photo/image calendar. Each month will highlight a specific artist’s piece. I got the month of February and I can basically do whatever I want. So of course, I don’t want to do a block print. Yes, that’s right. I don’t want to block print something. Seriously, I have other skills like drawing, painting, collaging, etc and I don’t get to experiment with them as much as I want. And as an artist, I don’t want to get pigeon-holed as only a block printer. The art director, Dee, gave me the month of February so I could do something with I HEART QUEENS. Hmmm. I thought about it for awhile. I did quite a few sketches of LIC and Queens cityscapes and bridges and I just couldn’t be satisfied because Queens is so awesome for so many reasons. All these reasons can’t be depicted in one realistic cityscape so I made a typographical landscape drawing using all the words that make up Queens. FYI-the sky is made up of people and celebrities who have a link to Queens and the buildings are made up of neighborhoods, streets, parks, public spaces, cultural and historical things.
Something totally different.
