I decided to create a blog to show the creative process I go through when designing my t-shirts. I have been working nonstop on Queensbound since May 07 when I first came up with the idea to block print Queens inspired shirts, and Ciara Couture since January 08 . I have lived in Queens since 2004 and absolutely love it. I also love comfy graphic tees and wanted one to represent my neighborhood, Sunnyside, Queens. Of course, there were none since Queens isn’t given the props it deserves. Any Queens t-shirts that do exist are so ugly and badly designed that I would be embarrassed to walk around in them.
During the month of May, I concentrated on fine-tuning my art skills by working on colleges, paintings, prints. I was really inspired by my new apartment. While I was a student at Parsons, I learned how to make block prints out of rubber so I carved a couple of Queens centric images and printed them onto painted canvases. The blocks were also the perfect size to print onto t-shirts. And that’s how it began.
